Join Portland investigative journalist and researcher Kate Kaye for an active Portland government records requesting workshop! Kate has been a journalist for 25+ years, and has investigated use of algorithmic and surveillance tech by Portland City government since 2019 for various publications including her own RedTailMedia.org. Bring your laptop or device of choice for this active workshop and learn how to file a Portland public records request!

There’s no need to prep, but if you have time, here are a few things to consider before the workshop:

The key to making successful public records requests? Do your homework! It’s best to be strategic, selective and as specific as possible in what you ask for and from which City Bureaus.

Some things to consider:

· What do you want to know that you cannot find information about?
· What types of tech equipment does Portland use? Is there more you’d like to know about it?
· What City Bureau/s use it?
· What types of data does that equipment generate or gather you might request?
· Is there a specific event or location where tech systems or data collection may have occurred you’d like to investigate?

· Research media reports that mention tech use.
· Review City Bureau public reports that may mention tech use.
